TidBITS on the iMovie ’09 8.0.1 Update

iMovie 09
I had my first workshop for iMovie 09 last week. I’ve used the earlier version of iMovie for years, and had allowed some reviewers negative comments to scare me away from the update. It takes getting used to, but it makes its own sense once you start working with it. Its biggest weakness: its audio capabilities remain less flexible than the older version.

To make the new iMovie work better for you (I guess it’s not so new, now that its been out a year and a half), Jeff Carlson of the indispensable TidBITS posts four little-known improvements to the 8.0.1 update to iMovie 09:

Thirty Free Image Sites!

Now that is a mess of Stock Image sites

Lifehacker points here to a Wendy Boswell’s Thirty Free Image Resources on the Web. Just Wednesday I posted about finding free photo sources, and here’s another great resource. I try to include some sort of graphic in every post, as it makes the site look better. I always try to observe the terms of use and you should too, for yourself and as an example for your students.

Free Photos for Edublogging Workshop

Today I’m showing some ECE students how to find and use free photos on their edublogs. Here’s a nice airplane from János at flickr.com to illustrate! Airplane image courtesy of János at flickr.com.

Before I do that, I want to make sure everyone knows how to find images that are licensed for reuse. The Creative Commons license allows that, as long as you provide attribution – i.e., you have to give credit to the photographer. This video from the Creative Commons site makes it easy to learn how to search for CC-licensed images using the Firefox browser.

Watched the video? Know how to make sure your images are licensed for putting in your blog? Let’s go:

Among my favorite sources for this is flickr, with tons of images under the CC license from professional and amateur photographers around the world.

I’ve posted more stock image sources here and here and here at DV for Teachers. Have fun!

x-posted.

Parallels Desktop vs. VMware Fusion

Competition means better software for all of us Wow. The University System of Georgia went with VMWare Fusion for Windows emulation on Macs, but that was several versions ago. MacTech testing says their competition has gotten so much better:

In the majority of overall averages of our tests, Parallels Desktop is the clear winner running 14-20% faster than VMware Fusion. The one exception is for those that need to run Windows XP, 32-bit on 2 virtual processors, VMware Fusion runs about 10% faster than Parallels Desktop.

Red the entire test report: Head-to-Head: Parallels Desktop for Mac vs. VMware Fusion. If you’re not running Windows on your Mac, and you’re considering it, there are other options as well.

Tips for Switching to Mac – PC Mag

This nice switch to Mac image courtesy PC Magazine
David Epstein with one of the best articles I’ve ever seen for understanding differences and similiarities when moving from Windows to Mac. It’s full of screenshots and helpful advice for understanding the Finder (the file-management equivalent to Windows Explorer). Articles this good remind me that I should re-read the basics more often. I never knew about the Show Path Bar option in the Finder he describes on page two, for instance. Always know which folder you're in, regardless of your Finder view. Awesome. It’s a really useful tip. There are many many other tips for seasoned Mac users, not just the new ones from the Windows side. Again, one of the best of its type I’ve found.

It’s an annoying six pages to load sequentially. Find the print-formatted version of the article here, but with none of the screenshots that make it so helpful.

Ars Reviews iLife ’09: making the cut with iMovie and iPhoto – Ars Technica

iLife 09 may be the best upgrade ever

I used to use iMovie much more often; now I do almost all my video editing in Final Cut Pro. Many in the college either use our small Mac lab for video and DVD creation or have their own Macs now. The new iLife, which incorporates iMovie, iDVD, iPhoto, and more, has achieved hit a sweet spot in power and usability. It’s still not a piece of cake for those used to Windows, but it’s stable, flexible, and really easy. Read through this exhaustive review from uber-tech site Ars Technica for a solid learning experience whether you’re a Mac rookie or experienced user.
